High Mast Lighting Meets Smart Technology

How is Phoenix making high mast lighting brighter, stronger and smarter?

By: Ivan Orndorff, Senior Software Engineer for Phoenix Lighting

Terminal yards are active, ever-changing environments. Incoming and outgoing trucks, containers, ships, and people require an adaptable, well-lit location to complete their jobs. As a low-maintenance, high-performance lighting solution, LEDs meet these critical needs.

Until recently, LEDs had one notable drawback for high mast applications: inflexible illumination. When the lights are on, they’re on, and when they’re off, they’re off. That means either sacrificing illumination or wasting energy.

As technology continues to advance, Phoenix Lighting has found a way to eliminate this compromise with smart wireless technology. This solution, known as the Lighting Intelligence Technology System (LIT System), has been expertly designed to give ports reliable, energy-efficient illumination with the ability to effortlessly control and monitor every element of it.

Get to Know the LIT System

The LIT System provides our customers with the opportunity to increase the safety and efficiency of their operations. Additionally, it provides the resources needed for them to effectively manage their lighting as an asset to maximize its return. Phoenix’s LIT System combines with high mast fixtures to enable lighting control, zone scheduling, asset management and real-time data collection.

Industry Challenge
Up to 100% of lighting-related energy is wasted when lights are running at full power during the day.

Solution
Each of Phoenix’s integrated high mast fixtures is equipped with its own wireless controller. This controller responds to signals given by the LIT System, allowing the user to dictate or schedule the exact illumination needed at any particular time.

Illumination can also be set to begin and end at a certain time, such as an hour before sunset and after sunrise, using the LIT System’s geographic location.

Industry Challenge
Traffic fluctuations require varied levels of illumination. Traditional lighting system see two options – on or off.

Solution
The LIT System allows ports and terminals to divide their yards into sections (or zones) to better control which areas are illuminated. Fixtures in high traffic areas can be programmed to  illuminate at full capacity, while fixtures in vacant areas can be dimmed to security levels to conserve energy.

Because each fixture is able to be controlled individually, each high mast pole can be customized in a multitude of ways.

Industry Challenge
Facilities need to see the ROI of their LED lighting investment and maximize the lifespan of their fixtures.

Solution
The LIT System dashboard is made up of user-initiated information that can be used to run asset management and energy reports. These reports can calculate the energy consumption of the fixtures over a period of time, performance of the fixtures in a specific zone, and status of any fixture errors (potential failures or outages).

By managing lighting as an asset and scheduling light output based on operational needs, terminals reduce energy usage by up to 30% and extend fixtures lifetime.

Industry Challenge
Maintenance personnel must take time to walk around and check which lights are out and then schedule repairs or replacements.

Solution
The wireless controllers transmit fixture status data to the LIT System dashboard via a secure connection to the cloud, all in real-time.

This data includes failure notifications and information to predict the future performance of the light fixtures. This can be particularly useful in automated terminals, where personnel are not nearby to observe potential failures. Knowing which fixtures are at risk can help prevent lapses in productivity due to lighting outages.

Industry Challenge
Most lighting control systems on the market today were designed for street lighting. When put in a terminal, they are often difficult to use, require lengthy, professional installation and lack the features needed to control zones and scheduling.

Solution
Phoenix’s LIT System is a simple, secure cloud-based dashboard that was built specifically for high mast applications. It is accessible anywhere and easy to use. Setup is hassle-free and can be done in minutes, not days. The LIT System makes it easy for ports to quickly manage, maintain, and assess their lighting systems.

In summary, the LIT System allows you to:

  • Customize your lighting based on your operational needs
  • Access your facility lighting from anywhere, at any time
  • Optimize your energy usage effortlessly and receive real-time energy saving data
  • Set up and understand your system in minutes – not hours or days

When ports make the investment to upgrade their lighting to LED, the inclusion of a simple, reliable intelligence system, like Phoenix’s LIT System, can deliver additional efficiency, productivity and safety that allows the terminal to truly manage the assets it has invested in.
