Phoenix Chosen for Lighting Upgrade of Greenville Bridge

Project Details

The Greenville Bridge, maintained by the Mississippi Department of Transportation, connects Mississippi and Arkansas with a main span of 1,378 feet, and is one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the U.S. with one of the longest spans on the lower Mississippi River. It was originally completed in 2010 and underwent a lighting upgrade in 2020.

Challenge:

Traditional 400W Metal Halide floodlights lined the bridge in extremely difficult locations to access. As lamps and ballasts continually failed, maintenance became operationally difficult and expensive.

A decision was made by Mississippi DOT to upgrade the lighting and Phoenix Lighting was chosen to design and manufacture the replacement floodlights based on analysis of fixture durability and ability to withstand challenging marine conditions. Replacement fixtures would require customized mounting to maintain existing brackets and be able to meet the MDOT’s required lumen output and delivery time to keep the project on schedule.

Solution:

In total, Phoenix delivered 129 units of EcoMod2-280 LED floodlights for the bridge lighting upgrade. Given the challenging locations of the lights, the durability and reliability of the EcoMod2 was a must in order to have the vibration and moisture resistance specs and test data to avoid premature failure.

Working alongside local authorities, engineering firms and our partner lighting agency Lighting Solutions, Phoenix designed a customized bracket and floodlight to match the mounting and installation patterns of existing floodlights. This was a critical feature that allowed an efficient and cost-effective installation process.

The EcoMod2 floodlights were delivered on-time and in batches to match the tight installation schedule.  Product availability and responsive manufacturing were critical decision factors for MDOT.

With a combination of durability, customizations and on-time delivery, Phoenix is uniquely positioned to deliver lighting designs and fixtures for municipal or private infrastructure products.
